Fire Slow Flow 60

Mary B.

Downtown • Madison, WI • Madison, WI

This hot class (105 degrees) offers time to embrace aspects of yoga at a pace that encourages awareness of the connections of mind, body and spirit. Class begins gradually, allowing the body to acclimate to the heat and quiet the mind. The combination of asana (finding and holding poses), pranayama (focused breathing) and vinyasa (moving with breath) deepens the practice and offers time to refine your body’s unique version of each pose. Research shows that practicing in higher heat increases the feel good neurotransmitters (endorphins) in the brain and blood flow which can boost mood as well as reduce tension and stress. What to bring: Mat, towel, water Room temp: 105°

My Teaching Style

I strive to teach classes where students can tap into their body awareness and moving meditation. My teaching is marked by focused, alignment-based cues; given with the intention of helping people understand the mechanics of their body. I like to offer creative escalation sequences, challenging balances, moments for organic movement, and space for silence. My favorite movement feels expansive and dance-like. I hope students feel embodied and peaceful leaving class.

Experience

I began practicing yoga about 8 years ago, as a supplement to classical ballet training. Yoga was a freeing and non-judgmental environment, where I learned about my body mechanics for injury prevention. As I continued dancing through my undergraduate at UW-Madison, my yoga practice continued to grow into a more and more important part of my life. In the last 2 years, I have taken an interest in contemplative practices and the spiritual roots of yoga. I am grateful to be a member of the Dfly community. Thank you for sharing your practice with me!

Favorite Pose

Trikonasana/Triangle: I enjoy the process of getting my hips and shoulders in one flat plane in this pose. Triangle is great combination of stretch across the inner thigh, strength in the obliques, opening across the chest, and energy through the arms to the fingertips.

Little Known Fact About Me

My favorite Dragonfly moment was when I was doing a yoga class in an orthopedic boot several months after breaking my ankle. At the end of class, the young yogi next to me said, “You are such a badass.” She scooted off before I got her name, but I hope she knows the impact she had on me. I walked out of the studio ten feet tall that day!

Flow 60

Tammy H.

Downtown • Madison, WI • Madison, WI

Breathe in, Sweat out! Dragonfly Flow is a type of yoga called Vinyasa. Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement.” This style focuses on linking the breath with movement and is often referred to as a moving meditation. The poses flow from one to another in conjunction with the breath. Build strength, increase flexibility, find focus, and have fun. You don’t have to know the poses to start–just try it out and after a few classes, you’ll be hooked. When you connect breath with movement, you give yourself the gift of possibility. The room is gently heated at 95 degrees to warm your muscles and ease you into poses. The heat feels amazing and know that you can always take child’s pose. Honoring your body IS yoga! Each instructor has a unique style of teaching (some love to give assists, some lead athletic classes while others lead more meditative classes) Breathe, Sweat, Move! What to bring: Mat, towel, water (also available for rent/purchase) What we provide: Blocks, straps, and filtered water dispenser Room temp: 95°

My Teaching Style

I lead with passion and purpose. I want yoga practitioners in a room to experience the mind-body connection, find themselves on the edge and extend their personal limits of possible, have peaceful and relaxing moments to re-charge, feel kindness and gratitude within themselves and others, and wish for coming to yoga classes again and again. My peer yoga teachers-in-training described my teaching as warm, purposeful, creative, well-organized, brave, unique, and educational.

Experience

I was exposed to occasional yoga classes but never engaged in a regular, intentional yoga practice until my daughter introduced me to the Dragonfly Hot Yoga in 2017. Since that time, I enjoy the Dragonfly community, the variety of classes, and learning from great instructors and inspiring peers. I completed my Yoga Teacher Training – 200 hours in February 2024. I appreciate an opportunity to grow as a practitioner and a yoga teacher with Dragonfly and am glad to apply my energy and skills to helping others benefit from the wonder of yoga practice.

Favorite Pose

A Deer Pose with a Twist is one of my favorite poses! This pose offers a balanced way to rotate hips and a twist of the upper body. It provides a deep sensation, relaxes, and gently helps to find inner peace.

Yoga Up

My Teaching Style

I love teaching with high energy and loud music! My mission is to create an environment where clients can be both challenged and encouraged all while having a good laugh in between sets. I design my classes to make sure you experience a nice balance of cardio, strength, and stretching. I want clients to walk away feeling proud of the work they did for themselves!

Experience

I started my journey in 2018 when a friend invited me to a $5 flow class at Dragonfly. I had never taken a hot yoga class before and assumed it wouldn’t be that challenging. Well, I was wrong. I loved the heat and difficulty of holding poses! I came back every week. Things really changed for me when I took my first UP class. After I took Power Up and Yoga Up, I was beyond hooked and these types of classes became part of my regular fitness regimen. I really enjoyed the loud music and intensity of these classes. Most of all, I loved the instructors who created such a fun environment to challenge myself. The variety of classes at Dfly have made me become stronger in mind and body. I can’t wait to give that back!

Favorite Pose

Malasana Squat- I love this pose! There is so much in this pose that you can do for stretching while also adding different movements for strength. This is a regular pose to play with in my classes!

“Writing is like running. I may have a moment where I write absolute crap but at least it’s something. It’s better to run a shabby five miles than none at all.”

Why I Love Dragonfly

I arrived at Dragonfly during a difficult time in my life and it had such a surprising impact on me. I couldn’t explain how the different classes were helping me both mentally and physically but they were. I kept coming back because I experienced their mission and values of creating a safe space for all. My love grew when I started taking the UP classes because Dfly made it so fun to be physically challenged. This is such a powerful place with so much to offer!

My Teaching Style

As a certified educator in Wisconsin schools since 2013, I bring an array of skills to deliver the scope of the classes I’m teaching. My students have described me as kind, thoughtful, and fun. I love the creativity, planning, and adaptivity in building a sequence that feels great in the body and challenges the mind and muscles to find their edge.

Experience

My Yoga practice began in 2009 when I read an online article about meditation. I remember going outside to sit, and found my mind racing and my body aching almost immediately! Over time, Yoga has grown into a pillar of my life, and while I have grown in my practice, I have never forgotten that feeling of starting anew. I am grateful to be able to give back to our community through teaching, with the guidance of my great teachers.

Favorite Pose

Do I have to choose one?? Then… Dancer. To me, asanas (poses) are all about building strength, balance, and flexibility. Dancer is at the center of all three of these. If I was allowed to choose three more they would be tree pose, pyramid, and śavāsana.

Favorite Quote

“What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose… a sunset, a mountain bathed in moonlight, the ocean in calm and in storm - we see these, love their beauty, hold the vision to our hearts. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.”
– Helen Keller

This quote inspires me because Helen never saw or heard any of these things, but wrote about them with poignant beauty. It reminds me of how much I have to simply be thankful for, even when life feels difficult.

Why I Love Dragonfly

Dragonfly is a place of refuge for me. The ability to connect with my inner self and this reality within the four corners of a mat, surrounded by those in our dear community, provides me with motivation and inspiration to continue to develop my practice.

Little Known Fact About Me

I have been to India! I travelled to India and Nepal with Scott Anderson of Blue Mounds Pilates in 2010. Seeing the Himalayas, meeting the people of India & Nepal, and following in the path of the Buddha were incredibly important to me and my faith.

We all arrive on our mats with a different intention. My goal with each and every class is to have you leave feeling a little better than you did before you arrived. I teach playful fl ows with fun tunes. We’ll find opportunities to find your edge and create space for what you need in your practice. Think of it as a dance between control and surrender. Let's flow!

Experience

I’ve been a student of yoga for many years (let’s not get into specifics). I became certified in early 2016 through Core Essence Yoga in downtown Milwaukee with a focus on Vinyasa Flow. Since then, I’ve taught at multiple studios and fitness centers throughout the North Shore. I’m super excited to get back to teaching where it all began...

Favorite Pose

Hmm, if I had to choose one it’d have to be Half Moon. There’s so much happening in this pose. Not only does it leave me feeling grounded, simultaneously I feel lifted and balanced. It is just one of those poses that never gets old. There’s always something new to discover and work on in this pose.

Favorite Quote

"It only takes a reminder to breathe, a moment to be still, and just like that, something in me settles, softens, makes space for imperfection. The harsh voice of judgment drops to a whisper and I remember again that life isn’t a relay race; that we will all cross the fi nish line; that waking up to life is what we were born for. As many times as I forget, catch myself charging forward without even knowing where I’m going, that many times I can make the choice to stop, to breathe, and be, and walk slowly into the mystery."
– Danna Faulds

Why I Love Dragonfly

Back when I was still dabbling in yoga I would practice at Dragonfly. When life got really challenging it was here that gave me the opportunity to be present in my body. I didn’t know how much I needed that at the time. It has been a place to explore, reset and leave to take on the outside world with a better outlook.

Little Known Fact About Me
